iPhone 3G on AirtelVodafone and Airtel are unwilling to talk about the price they will offer the iPhone at, but Bharti Airtel CEO Manoj Kohli told TOI there is no question of subsidising the handset in India. “US operators are able to subsidise handsets because they can make up for that with their call charges. They charge rates like 25 cents a minute. In India, the charge is 1.5 to 2 cents a minute,” Kohli said.

If you watched the WWDC keynote, Steve Jobs categorically said “The price is a maximum of $199 all around the world — we’re really, really excited about the new iPhone 3G.” So take what you may from this, we just hope it is a good deal for the consumer at the end of the day.

  • I for one am more than happy to pay a premium up-front rather than have the carriers milk me for next 2-3 years. I'd rather pay 15,000 - 20,000 Rs. upfront than pay 8,000 Rs. for the phone and pay 2,000 Rs a month for a compulsory data plan over 2 years. Look at what Rogers is doing to the Canadians! I also wonder if they'll sell the devices unlocked...
